It’s more than half a century since a brand new airplane has been bought by Iran. Since the U.S. sanction have been applied to the Iran’s airline fleet, Iran haven’t been enabled to improve its air fleet and you can’t expect much from its airline such as Mahan Air. Different Planes in Iran
There are generally two types of airliners in Iran: wide-body and large aircrafts.
Wide-Body Aircrafts
In a typical wide-body airplane, there is enough space to accommodate two passenger aisles with seven to nine seats abreast. This is why it’s also called a two-aisle plane. These planes allow a total capacity of 200 to 850 passengers. The width of wide-body planes is between 5 to 6 meters. Not only they are used as airliners that carry passengers, but they are also used as cargo aircrafts.
Narrow-Body Airliner
As the name tells, these airliners are smaller than wide-body aircrafts and they are something between 3 to 4 meters wide. There’s only one single aisle and seats between two to six people abreast. They have a capacity of 300 passengers and are not used for long distance flights.

Best Aircrafts in Iran

Airbus A320
Airbus planes in Iran are a little higher and better than average. Airbus A320 is a one-aisle narrow-body aircraft. As mentioned before, it’s mostly used for short flights. All the A320s in Iran have been working for more than 30 years and would have been retired if used in any other countries. They allow a number of 180 passengers.

AirBoss A340-600
AirBoss 340 is also one the best working airplanes in Iran, as it’s a wide-body plane and suitable for long flights. This is 600 class plane with 4 engines and accommodates 440 passengers. This plane has economy, business, and first class flights.

AirBoss A350
A350 is the next generation of AirBoss after A340 and have more options than the previous one. The flaws have been fixed to compete with Boeing 777 and 787. This aircraft, too, is a wide-body plane used for long flights. It creates less noise pollution (because of its engines) and consumes %25 less fuel and has more power.

AirBoss A330
A330 is one of the best planes that is still flying in Iran and has been bought by Iran after the sanctions were suspended. It’s similar to A340 with small differences like the number of the engines. This one is also another wide-body plane with the capacity of 440 passengers.

- Mostly used by Iran Air (ten A340s were bought by IR after the JCPOA deal, but after its cancellation only two were received by Iran)
ATR 72
Made possible by a negotiated relaxation of international sanctions against Iran, during June 2017, a €1 billion Iranian contract was finalized for the 40 airliners. It can perform well in hot and high-altitude conditions.
Boeing 737
Boeing 737 is one of the most common and best aircrafts in Irans air fleet due to its economical expenses. It’s a single-aisle plane because it can only allow 200 passengers for short flights.

Boeing 777
As we mentioned in the introduction of Airbus A350, these two air fleets have a really tight competition with each other. Boeing 777 is one of the most popular aircrafts in the world; but due to the sanctions against Iran, there are only few 777s in Iran’s air fleet.
Fokker 100
Fokker 100 is a Dutch two-engined aircraft which lost its popularity after Airbus 318 and 319 and Boein 737; but it’s still used in Iran’s air fleet.
